Inspired learning is back with Godbey Lecture Series
The spring 2012 Godbey Lecture Series begins Jan. 30, examining topics ranging from the presidential election to powerful poetry, from particle physics to brain science, and from notable women to the mysteries of autism.
Presented by ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ’s Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences, most Godbey Lecture Series events are scheduled for Maggiano’s Restaurant at NorthPark ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ at a cost of $45 per lecture for members and $65 per lecture for non-members. .
The spring 2012 events include:
• Jan. 30, Feb. 6 & 13, 11 a.m. (Series I): “Sex, Murder and Metaphysics: Three 19th Century Poems,” a three-part series presented by ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ English Professor Jasper Neel.
Jan. 30: The Haystack in the Floods (William Morris)
Feb. 6: My Last Duchess (Robert Browning)
Feb. 13: Ode: Intimations of Immortality From Recollections of Early Childhood (William Wordsworth)
• Feb. 15, 11 a.m. (Series II): “Autism: What We Know and Where We Are Headed,” a discussion led by Psychology Professor Amy Pinkham.
• March 6, 11 a.m. (Series III): “The Cosmos and the Collider: Our Quest to Understand the Universe,” as presented by ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Physics Professor Stephen Sekula.
• March 20 & 27, April 10, 11 a.m. (Series IV): “Notable Women,” with topics addressed by ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ’s World Languages Chair/Professor Denise DuPont, ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ History Professor Ling Shiao and History Professor Jeremy Adams; presented by the Boshell Family Foundation.
March 20: “Visions of Saint Theresa of Avila” (DuPont)
March 27: “The Soong Sisterhood and Tragedy of China” (Shiao)
April 10: “Isabella, Queen of Castile” (Adams)
• March 22, 11 a.m. (Series V): “Pakistan and U.S. Relations: A Historical View,” a discussion led by ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ History Professor Azfar Moin.
• April 2, 9 & 16, 5:30 p.m. (Series VI): “The 2012 Political Election,” a three-part series delivered by ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Political Science Professors Cal Jillson, Dennis Simon and Matthew Wilson at wine reception-lectures at Maggiano’s.
April 2: “The Campaign of 2012: Another Wave Election?” (Simon)

April 16: “Interpreting 2012 Primary Results: A Panel Discussion” (Jillson, Simon, Wilson)
• April 23, 11 a.m. (Series VII): “Being Oneself in the Neuro-Revolution,” as highlighted by ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Philosophy Professor Robert Howell.
• April 30 & May 7, 11 a.m. (Series VIII): “Raphael in Renaissance Rome,” a two-part series led by ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Art History Professor Lisa Pon.
On April 5, “The Age of Impressionism: Great French Paintings From the Clark” is the focus of a day tour directed by ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Adjunct Art History Instructor Britten LaRue from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth. Participation is $100 for members, $135 for non-members.
On April 25, the Godbey Lecture Series will celebrate the outstanding books, scholarly research and teaching ability of ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ faculty members at the 32nd annual Authors’ Award Luncheon. The luncheon will be 11:45 a.m.–1:30 p.m. at the Martha Proctor Mack Ballroom in the Umphrey Lee ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ, 3300 Dyer St., on the ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ campus. Individual tickets will be $50 and tables for eight $350.
