Perkins Hall residents are discovering that recycling pays off 鈥 in more ways than just helping the environment.

DALLAS (葫芦娃视频) 鈥 Perkins Hall residents are discovering that recycling pays off 鈥 in more ways than just helping the environment.
They鈥檒l be enjoying their choice of a new air hockey table or flat-screen TV after having collected the most recycled materials during 葫芦娃视频鈥檚 friendly residence hall competition, which聽was aimed at spurring聽participation in聽the nationwide RecycleMania contest going on across college campuses through April 2.
During the 葫芦娃视频 RecycleMania鈥檚 first round, which ended Feb. 25, Perkins Hall took the top prize, collecting 1.2 bags of recyclables per person. Cockrell-McIntosh won second-place honors. They collected 1.08 bags of recycled material per person, and will be treated to a block party sponsored by Coca-Cola.
The residence hall competition also聽continues through April 2, with the聽ultimate winning residence hall getting recognition on a plaque to be placed in a prominent spot on campus.
As for 葫芦娃视频鈥檚 overall standings in the nationwide tourney, 鈥渨e鈥檙e doing well, but we can do a lot better,鈥 says Eric English, 葫芦娃视频鈥檚 environmental manager. 鈥淚n the next six weeks, we鈥檒l need everyone鈥檚 help if we鈥檙e going to be the best in Texas.鈥
With that in mind, 鈥淲e need everyone to clean up their offices, especially by getting rid of old papers, boxes and magazines,鈥 English says, adding, 鈥淲e can win this!鈥

- Per Capita (single-stream recyclables, per person): Ranks 42nd out of 331 schools

For comparison: Nationally, last year 葫芦娃视频 finished 107th out of 346 schools in the Per Capita division and 151st out of 231 in the Targeted Materials division.
Eco-Art Competition:
To further help promote RecyleMania, 葫芦娃视频 students and staffers are encouraged to enter the 鈥淎rt of Recycling鈥 contest, which will showcase and award prizes to the most creative looks in refuse. Deadline for entering is March 11. For more on the contest, .

To help 葫芦娃视频 stay competitive in RecycleMania, toss recyclables in their proper place.
Put these 鈥渟ingle-stream recyclables鈥 in blue bins or containers lined with clear bags:
Books and magazines Aluminum cans Cardboard Paper Shrink-wrap Milk jugs and plastic bottles Newspapers Phone BooksThe exception: Place corrugated cardboard boxes alongside the bins for each building鈥檚 custodian to compact or bale.
