Enrollment

What are the key transfer policies I should know when planning my move to ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅?
  • Official transcripts are required for all college-level work attempted, regardless of transferability.
  • Of the 120 credit hours required for a degree, 48-60 hours must be earned in residence at ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅.
  • All students must complete ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅’s Common Curriculum and at least one major to earn an undergraduate degree.
  • If your current institution operates on a quarter system, credits will be converted to semester hours by multiplying by 0.67. Courses fulfilling Common Curriculum requirements must be at least 3 semester hours. If you’re unsure about your institution’s credit system, refer to the transcript legend or your school’s catalog or website.

An ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅ degree typically requires a minimum of 120 credit hours, with at least 60 hours completed in residence at ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅. The degree is made up of three components:

  • Courses in your major
  • Courses required for the Common Curriculum (CC)
  • Elective courses, which can also be used to pursue a second major or minor

Your assigned admission counselor can guide you through ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅’s requirements and procedures, help explore academic interests, clarify expectations, and prepare you for a successful transfer. Long-term planning is key to making the most of ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅’s degree programs, which are designed to give you flexibility, as well as the expertise you need to succeed.

Start now by reviewing the admission and degree requirements in ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅’s . The University Advising ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅ website is another valuable resource for understanding academic policies and exploring ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅’s offerings.

ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅ requires official transcripts for all college-level coursework attempted before enrollment, regardless of transferability. ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅ accepts most academic credits earned with a grade of C- or better from regionally accredited institutions, provided the courses meet content and policy requirements.

To be considered for transfer admission, you must have completed one of the following within the past three years:

  • College algebra
  • A high school sequence of Algebra I, Algebra II, and Plane Geometry

After transfer, you must then meet ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅’s Common Curriculum math requirement, which includes one three-hour math fundamentals course, unless you are transferring in a course to meet it. ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅ does not accept developmental math courses for transfer.

When selecting a math course for transfer, review your current institution’s course descriptions and compare them with  to ensure compatibility.

Understanding your credits

  • Courses below college level, such as developmental English, math, and reading courses, as well as ESL courses
  • Vocational-technical courses, including Workforce Education courses
  • Physical education activity courses exceeding two credit hours
  • Correspondence courses
  • Courses completed at non-regionally accredited institutions
  • Courses with a grade below C- (Note: While these courses are non-transferable, the grade is factored into the all-college GPA, which is used for admission eligibility and calculating Latin honors at graduation.)
  • Credit by examination earned at another college or university

ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅ accepts transfer courses from regionally accredited colleges and universities. Vocational and remedial courses are not eligible for transfer.
Here are two tools to assist with transfer planning:

  •  shows how courses transfer to ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅. It includes courses that have already been reviewed by the university, and new courses are added as they are evaluated. Transferable courses without a direct ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅ equivalent are awarded elective credit with a generic course number like “XX” or “YY.”
  • Transfer Pathway Guides help you match your transfer coursework with ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅'s degree requirements. These guides provide details on admission procedures, academic programs, and how your courses will transfer to ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅.

Upon admission, you'll receive a Transfer Evaluation Report (TER) that shows which courses have been approved for ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅ credit, and also the reasons why other courses were deemed non-transferable.

This will be emailed to your ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅ email address and posted in your  account. Information on how to access your ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅ email is available in your admission portal.

Courses not directly offered at ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅ may receive generic course numbers or free-elective transfer credit. These courses, completed with a grade of "C-" or better, must come from regionally accredited institutions. Generic course numbers include designations such as “XX,” “YY,” “U1,” or “U2.”

Current ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅ students planning to take transfer courses must complete a  through their academic records office.

If a course is deemed non-transferable, a code explaining the reason is provided on the right side of the Transfer Evaluation Report. Refer to the table below for explanations of these codes.

Non-Transferable Code on Transfer Evaluation Report
Code Descriptions
NTCN
Course does not meet ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅ standards for content
NTPL Course does not satisfy ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅ academic policies
NTXX Further information is needed to evaluate the course
NTVL Course is vocational or technical
NTRE Course is below college level or remedial
(e.g., Developmental English, math, and reading courses; ESL courses)
NTVR Course completed with a grade below a "C-", a Withdrawal, or a course in progress (IP)
(Note: Although the course is non-transferable, a grade below C- will be calculated into the all-college G.P.A. and will affect admission eligibility)

If a course on your Transfer Evaluation Report is marked as NTCN (non-transferable due to content) or NTPL (non-transferable due to policy), but you believe it should transfer, email Transfer Student Services at transfer@smu.edu for assistance.

ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅ accepts “Pass” grades for transfer courses if the awarding institution's grading scale defines "Pass" as equivalent to a grade of C- or better. For example, if a course is marked as “P” at the transferring institution and meets the C- or better standard, ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅ will evaluate it as “Pass” and award credit.

ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅ students are limited to a total of 12 hours of Pass credits, which includes grades from accepted transfer courses. This requirement cannot be waived.

If a course isn’t listed in the , it will be evaluated after ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅ receives your official college transcript. If you’re planning for a future transfer, contact Transfer Student Services at transfer@smu.edu to inquire whether the course is transferable.

Guidelines for official transcripts

Yes. Official transcripts are required for all college-level coursework attempted, regardless of transferability.

Transcripts must be sent directly to ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅ from the issuing institution to be considered official. Transcripts issued to you are acceptable if they are received in a sealed, letterhead envelope with the Registrar’s Office stamp.

ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅ only accepts electronic transcripts sent securely by the issuing institution (e.g., via Scrip-Safe, NSC, or GreenLight). Transcripts sent by students will not be accepted.

Transcripts must be dated fewer than three years prior to processing.

GPAs

Your Transfer GPA is calculated using all transferable coursework and is considered for both admission and transfer scholarship eligibility.

The most recent grade is used for repeated courses where the original grade was "F" or "D." For repeated courses where the original grade was C- or higher, all grades are included in the transfer GPA calculation, but credit is awarded only for the first successful attempt.

To qualify for transfer grade replacement, the repeated course must be taken at the same institution where the original grade was earned or must carry the same course number under a statewide course numbering system.

A grade of W (Withdrawn) is not included in the transfer GPA. A grade of I (Incomplete) or a missing grade is calculated as an F. A grade of IP (In Progress) for a current term is not calculated.

Coursework completed in probationary or conditional programs is also included in the Transfer GPA calculation.

For majors requiring a subset of courses and specific GPAs for entry, the subset GPA is calculated using the first graded attempt of these courses, regardless of whether the course was failed or later repeated.

No. Transfer course grades are not included in the calculation of major or minor GPAs.

Academic Forgiveness

I'm looking for a fresh start in my academic career. How can ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅’s Academic Forgiveness policy benefit me?

ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅ allows students to exclude coursework taken 10 or more years prior to the term of admission. These courses will not be considered during the admission review, will not count toward the transferable GPA, and will not be included in the calculation of hours earned for transfer to ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅.

To request academic forgiveness, applicants must:

  • Submit official transcripts
  • Complete and submit ΊωΒ«ΝήΚΣΖ΅'s Academic Forgiveness Form
  • Include all required application materials at the time of admission
